SASANIAN KINGS. Yazdgard I, 399-420. Drachm (Silver, 25 mm, 4.25 g, 3 h), WH (Weh-Andiyōk-Šābuhr). Draped bust of Yazdgird I to right, wearing an elaborate mural crown with a frontal crescent; to left and right, ‘mzdysn bgy l’mštly – yzdklty MLKAn MLKA’ = ‘mazdēsn bay rāmšahr Yazdgird šāhān šāh’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord with a peaceful realm, Yazdgird, King of Kings’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; to right and left, ‘ʾtwly ˗ yzdklty’ = ‘ādur [ī] Yazdgird’ (‘Fire of Yazdgird’ in Pahlavi); to the left of the flames, WH (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi); traces of ‘lʾst’ = ‘rāst’ (‘true’ in Pahlavi) on the altar shaft. SNS III/2, type Ib2/1a. Göbl type I/1. Beautifully toned. Struck from somewhat worn dies, otherwise, good very fine.
